do programmable thermostats really save money?
Programmable thermostats have a wide range of energy saving and cost saving benefits as they are far more efficient than traditional thermostats. A programmable thermostat is an excellent way to save energy, but only if you use them properly. According to Energy Star, at least 45% of a home's energy is utilized for cooling and heating. When they are used correctly, programmable thermostats can save you at least 10-30% on heating and cooling bills.
How does one 'correctly' use a programmable thermostat?
The human factor is very important. How you use and manage your furnace will determine how much you will save. Setting your thermostat back when you are asleep or away from home is the best way to save money. For winter months, you should ideally program your furnace's thermostat to maintain a constant temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Obviously, this temperature will not work for everyone as people who live in colder areas may desire higher average set temperature.
When you are asleep or not at home, you can lower the thermostat temperature by 10-12 degrees Fahrenheit in order to save money and energy. Now, setting your thermostat back by 10 degrees will lead to a significant decrease in energy consumption. You can program your thermostat to return to 68 degrees an hour or so before you normally wake up or return home. Proper programming of your thermostat is where you’ll realize the greatest energy savings.
How else can you save?
Maintaining a consistent energy schedule is critical to experiencing energy savings. If you are not maintaining a schedule on a daily basis, you are unlikely to see any results and you may even be subject to higher energy costs if your thermostat is always functioning at a higher temperature setting.
Wherever possible, maintain the lowest possible temperature setting and be sure the thermostat is programmed based on your actual lifestyle and sleep patterns. If you are constantly changing your entry and exit times, a programmable thermostat has less benefit than if you remain consistent in your schedule and temperature setting changes.
If you find that you and your family tend to change your schedule frequently, it may be best to override the programmed settings as dictated by your day-to-day routine.
