Greencastle Furnace Repair – Should You Replace or Repair Your Furnace?
All furnace owners often reach a point when they face the decision of replacing their furnace or salvaging it through repair. That reality of no heat often leads to feelings of dread. As a layman, you are unsure of your course of action and you may get conflicting advice from professionals. Ultimately, it’s your decision though. What are the things you should keep in mind?
Consider the age of the furnace
If your furnace is approaching 15 years of age and it constantly breaks down, you will be better off replacing it. Chances are you are going to spend more on never-ending repair than you would on a shiny, new furnace. New furnaces will be more efficient and they will can be worth the initial investment in energy savings and reduced repair costs.
Furnace fuel efficiency
Check out the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of your existing furnace before making a decision. Most current furnaces are at least 80%-95% efficient, while furnaces that are at least 10 years old are likely to be less than 80% efficient. If your energy bills are increasing, it’s a sign that your furnace is losing efficiency.
If this is the case, you should replace the furnace as the cost of a new furnace will be trumped by the cost of regular repair of an old model and rising energy bills.
Consider the nature of the problem
If the problem is relatively minor like replacing an air filter or if you need to just make a minor upgrade, replacement may not be the best answer. If you feel like you are facing too many problems with a furnace that’s less than 10 years of age, doing a cost-benefit analysis should help you arrive at a decision.
If the furnace has a cracked heat exchange or something similarly serious, replacement should be a no-brainer. Leaking furnaces can cause deadly exhaust fumes within the living environment.
Furnace noise and function
If your system is making strange noises most of the time, considering a replacement is ideal. The problem could be the size of your duct system or with the furnace’s interior components. If you feel that the temperature is unstable in different areas of your home or if your blower is blowing cold air, have the problem diagnosed by a furnace repair expert. Always consult a HVAC service contractor before making a final decision.
